IT & GIS Discipline

Introduction:

IT & GIS Discipline (erstwhile functioning as Forest Informatics Division) was established in May 2008 as “Bioinformatics and GIS division”. The division hosts DBT funded “Bioinformatics Centre” from where the name of the division “Forest Informatics” was derived and the division was renamed as Forest Informatics Division after integrating the GIS works with the division in year 2009. Currently it is functioning as IT & GIS Discipline under Facility and Services Division of FRI which hosts: 1. Bioinformatics Centre, 2. Information Technology Cell and 3. GIS Centre. The Information Technology Cell functions as central service providing unit in the Information & Communication Technology domain. The development of GIS centre was initiated in the Forest Soil & Land Reclamation Division in 2006 which was transferred and merged with the IT Cell in the year 2009. Presently, the IT & GIS Discipline hosts state-of-art-laboratories cum class rooms for implementing and supporting IT and RS-GIS based services to various ongoing projects of the institute including teaching and trainings to students of FRI Deemed to be University and other institutes through tailored training courses. It is situated in the magnificent main building of FRI at extreme western end side.

Since its establishment the discipline has been catering essential services related to IT and RS-GIS for research, education, training and extension. The discipline provides all necessary support services in the domain of IT and RS-GIS to all divisions of FRI, ICFRE, FRI Deemed to be University and other associated organisations.

New Initiatives

  • Testing and development of dynamic forest vegetation models for the assessment of impacts of various drivers (primarily socio-economic and climate change) on the forest ecosystems.
  • To act as a research centre of FRI Deemed to be University, Dehradun for the students pursuing PhD in the discipline of “Forest Geo-informatics”.
