ICFRE-Forest Research Institute organised a one-day Regional Research Conference (RRC) jointly with Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla on 9th September,2025. The theme for this year’s RRC was “Role of urban forestry and community engagement in building climate resilient cities.” The Regional Research Conference commenced with the welcome address delivered by Dr. DP Khali, Scientist ‘G’& Group Co-ordinator(Research).

In her inaugural address, Dr. Renu Singh, Director, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun expressed her views on role of urban forestry and highlighted the significance of community engagement in building climate resilient cities.She further enlightened the gathering about the initiatives taken by the Government like AMRUT, Smart Cities Mission, National Action Plan on Climate Change etc.

Dr. Manisha Thapliyal, Director HFRI Shimla offered her viewpoint on urban greening and talked about key initiatives by government like Nagar Vans.

Dr. Jagdish Chander, retired Head of Forest Force (HoFF) and PCCF, Haryana gave a presentation on urbanizationand importance of urban forests in peri-urban areas.He raised his concern on the decreasing green cover and emphasized the importance of participation of people in urban forestry. Dr. Sameer Sinha, HoFF and PCCF Uttarakhand in his keynote address talked about the disasters that recently wrought havoc in the state and nearby areas and urged the masses to contribute their bit towards the environment by making small changes in their lifestyle.

Municipal Commissioner of Dehradun, Mrs. Namami Bansal highlighted the various issues faced by the Dehradun city like encroachment, waste management and losing green cover and discussed the steps taken by her team to overcome these.

In her presentation, Dr Kshama Gupta, Scientist Engineer SG,IIRS, discussed about the multiple urban green spaces like green roofs, urban green park,and community woodland. She stressed on the various remote sensing techniques to overcome the environmental challenges.

The meeting was attended by more than 100 participants which included bureaucrats, senior officials from various forest departments, scientists from institutes/organizations, technical personnels and stakeholders.The importance of urban green cover and the challenges faced in public involvement in building climate resilient cities were deliberated and discussed upon.

The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks given by Dr. Parul Bhatt Kotiyal, Head and Scientist ‘F’, Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division.
