Forest Research Institute, Dehradun celebrated “Himalayan day” on 9th September, 2019

Forest Research Institute, Dehradun celebrated “Himalayan day” on 9th September, 2019 in the premises of the FRI. The theme of exhibition was “Science of Himalaya”. The exhibition was organised by Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division of FRI where in research works carried out by the different divisions of Forest Research Institute in Himalayan region were displayed. Himalayan Day was initiated by eminent environmentalist in the region in 2010. The Government of Uttarakhand declared 9th September as Himalayan day in 2014. FRI is working on various aspects of research to restore the Himalayan ecology which includes important flora and fauna, climate change studies and hydrology of Himalaya. Shri Arun Singh Rawat Director FRI took keen interest to create awareness about great Himalaya among the various stakeholders and students of FRI University. He advised to sensitize people in general and environmental activists in particular by celebration of this day.
Dr. Mohammad Yusuf, Scientist G and Director in Charge, FRI inaugurated the exhibition and emphasised that Himalayan fragile ecosystem is experiencing abrupt changes due to population pressure, their migration to urban areas and developmental activities initiated to sustain them. Sh. N. Bala, Head, Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division explained the uniqueness of Himalayan ecosystem and suggested to find out alternatives to reduce the burden on Himalayas and conservation of natural resources. Scientists and Officers of Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division, FRI explained the work on restoring the ecology of Himalayas, Impact of Forest Fire, Hydrological studies of ecosystem services provided by Himalaya and work done by various division to improve the ecology of Himalaya by means of Tissue culture, Tree improvement, Silviculture management, regeneration, NTFPs of Himalayas. Various Divisions of the Institute also displayed their research works relevant to the Himalayan Ecosystem. The students of FRI Deemed to be University also participated in the exhibition organised in FRI main building. The exhibition was opened for all the visitors on the occasion of Himalayan Day celebration at FRI.
